Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday or TGIFF

Hey y’all! Today is TGIFF! Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday is run by Anja of Anja Quilts, Leanne of Devoted Quilter, & Laura of Slice of Pi Quilts. If you’ve never done a linky party, then be sure to check out the details at the bottom on how to join. First and foremost, I’d like to share my finish for the week.

My TGIFF Finish

A little backstory. As the school year came to a close, I gifted quilts to my son’s teachers, as it has become my favorite teacher gift. However, just a few weeks into summer, an unexpected request came my way. One teacher reached out, expressing interest in having a quilt made for her son.

It has been a few years since I last took on a commission, and I felt hesitant about accepting. She said, “He wants a quilt made from the same fabric as his baby quilt”, which was a decade ago. This posed a concern for me since searching for Out of Print (OOP) fabric can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. However, thanks to Etsy, we were able to find precuts of the exact fabric collection used in the original quilt.

Simple patchwork quilt consisting of large and small squares in varying shades of blue, orange, yellow, and brown.

Using a couple layer cakes and charm packs I was able to create a simple patchwork quilt. I’ve been calling it the #CakeSliceQuilt, and it will eventually be another pattern in my shop. It’ll be similar to my Sweet 16 Patch Quilt which is a new take on a classic pattern. 😘

The boy who I made the quilt for had a specific request of minky backing and straight lines for the quilting. The quilting is Aurifil 50wt in a rust orange color, which resulted in a fantastic secondary pattern on the back. The only thing that is missing from the quilt is a label. Typically, I label quilts with personal details, but for this particular quilt, it didn’t seem like the best course of action. I’m curious, how do you all label quilts that are commissions or intended for individuals beyond close friends and family?

I’m so impressed you were able to source all the fabrics you used ten years ago. Bet the recipient loves his new quilt and the memories it olds of his old quilt.
