Baby Size Blanco Quilt featuring Natural History Fabric

Today I am sharing the baby size version of my Blanco Quilt pattern made with Lizzy House Natural History fabric. This is the first version I made when testing my pattern math, therefore it holds a special place in my heart. Don’t tell the others. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You can find the Blanco Quilt pattern in my Etsy Shop.

Simple Two Color Quilt

The Blanco Quilt was designed as a simple two color modern-traditional quilt pattern. I love the ease of two color quilts and how a bold fabric choice can completely change the vibe.

This Lizzy House Natural History fabric is from five years ago, so you might have trouble finding the fabric if you would like to make a similar version. ๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™€๏ธ (I found the burgundy colorway on Etsy) I have a skinny bolt worth of this fabric and I chose it specifically because I knew I would have enough if my quilt math was wrong. Which it was because I completely forgot to cut squares for the center of the block and had to go back and cut more fabric.

Quilty math and fabrics.
Almost all cut out and ready to stitch, just missing some squares.

It did feel pretty damn amazing to get this quilt top put together! Months of hard work on the computer designing & in my mind doing quilt math became something tangible.

The Perfect Baby Size Blanco Quilt

The baby size Blanco Quilt is one of my favorite sizes for younger kids. The dimensions of the quilt are 42″ x 56″, which makes it small enough to not require a ton of fabric, as well as big enough to last a baby from birth to about 4 or 5 years old. Furthermore, at 56″ long, it makes for a decent sized couch quilt, as long as you don’t have to share it with anyone.

Coordinating Quilt Binding

I kept things simple for the binding of this quilt and used more of the Lizzy House Natural History fabric. We know I have enough of the fabric in my stash. Couple that with the fact that I love the way this particular print looks as a binding fabric and we have a winning solution. My bindings is cut at 2.25″ x WOF and I hand stitch it to the back of the quilt. You can find a simple tutorial for making a quilt binding HERE.

Modern Walking-Foot Quilting

Unlike my queen size Blanco Quilt, I machine quilted this version myself. I love to quilt my own quilts when they are small enough to handle without a fight. The simple, not quite straight-line quilting is my go to method when I need to get a project done quickly. I echoed the seam lines of the blocks and sashing horizontally and vertically using Aurifil 50wt thread. After a wash it is perfect and crinkled, ready for all the cuddles.

108″ Wide Fabric Backing

There are a handful of fabrics that I will buy by the bolt, that list includes: Robert Kaufman Kona White, Michael Miller Bright White, and the Story 108″ Wide Spackle Newsprintย by Carrie Bloomston for Windham Fabrics. This fabric is my go to when it comes to backing quilts because the black & white newsprint goes with everything. Furthermore, being a wide backing means no matching seams for a backing. ๐Ÿ˜œ
