Today I’m on the Auribuzz blog talking all about the Fat Quarter Shop Threadology Quilt Along. My company, Aurifil Thread, was asked to sew along this year and I jumped at the opportunity. Not only because I love a good quilt along, but also because this years charity, Make-A-Wish foundation, holds a special place in my heart.
A little background…. When I was in college I participated in the Disney College Program and, as a theatre major at the time, I was cast as a Skipper on the Jungle Cruise. It was one of the most life changing events of my life. At Disney I learned how to not be afraid to be myself, how to talk to literally anyone, and that I could rock some super fashionable pleated khaki pants. 😉
Something you might not know is that The Jungle Cruise is one of the few rides at the Magic Kingdom that is wheelchair accessible. There is a special boat, the Wamba Wanda, that has a wheelchair lift so that individuals do not have to be able to transfer out of their wheelchair to experience the ride. ❤
This meant that we as Jungle Cruise Skippers had the privilege of making a little extra magic each day for the amazing Make-A-Wish kids visiting Disney. One little girl and her family came back 2 days in a row; I’ll never forget the joy on her face, and I wish for the life of me I could remember her name. At the time I knew what I was doing, however small telling silly jokes about animals may be, was having an impact on the families and children that boarded the boat for our little 10 minute cruise. And now as a parent and mom myself, looking back 10 years later, I can feel it in my heart & soul.
Giving of yourself completely is not something exclusive to parents, but for me, becoming mom amplified the fact that I would do anything for another human being in my life. That is why Make-A-Wish is one of the charities that I will always be proud to support. So that these families that have experienced so much can give their children what their heart desires. Especially in the world we live in today… every little bit of kindness helps. ❤
