The Pumpkin Love Quilt is my newest original quilt design! My inspiration came from my love of all things fall, and Halloween, and pumpkin spice. ๐ŸŽƒ Last year I drew this design and started the pattern writing process. However, due to a few different factors I decided I wasn’t mentally ready to go through the process of creating the pattern. This past August I decided it was time to make it happen.

Pumpkin Love Quilt Blocks

When I write quilt patterns I do it backwards from the suggested manner. Normally you write the pattern completely, then make the quilt. Well I like to make the quilt then write the pattern. It’s just how my brain works. ๐Ÿ˜

The blocks in the Pumpkin Love quilt include classic Ohio Stars and a cute squatty pumpkin with a heart in the center. It took a bit of trial and error to get the pumpkin block just right. Easy to construct, but still detailed enough to give the affect I was looking for were my main goals.

For the fabrics I used the following colors of Moda Grunge Basics: Eggplant for the background, Pumpkin for the pumpkins & star centers, Blush for the hearts, Acorn for the star points and pumpkin stems, and Decadent for the leaves. All piecing was done with Aurifil 50wt thread.

Longarm Quilting & Finishing

I took a quick road trip to my friend Sam’s house to quilt the quilt. She owns the Handi Quilter Moxie XL and it makes quick work of finishing quilts. The pantograph is the Jolly Jack design from OESD Longarm Quilting. It is the absolute cutest and don’t let Sam convince you otherwise because it has a bunch of back tracking.

For the thread it was a toss-up between orange or purple. In the end choosing the Glide Raven purple color was the best choice! It blends seamlessly with the purple background, and is a fun pop of color on the pumpkins and stars.

Unfortunately the backing fabric I used is no longer in print. In case you haven’t heard. Alexander Henry Fabrics no longer produces fabrics due to the death of the lead designer this past May. Now what remains has become a hot commodity on the resale market.

When High Fashion Fabrics was closing last year I was able to get a hefty chunk of this Alexander Henry Favorite Haunts fabric to use as a quilt back. I found some on eBay if you need to add it to your stash. And of course if you do use it for a quilt back, make sure you pattern match that seam. ๐Ÿ˜˜

I kept the binding on this quilt super simple using the leftover fabric I used for the background. You can get the PDF digital download pattern now in my Etsy Shop . As a reward for making it to the end of this post use code PUMPKINBLOG for 10% off.

Stay tuned to the blog, my newsletter, or any of my socials because I have at least two more versions of Pumpkin Love in the works. Plus, there might just be a quilt along in the near future!

Happy Quilting!
