Spelling Bee Quilt Teacher Gift

Today I am excited to show you the Spelling Bee Quilt that I made for my youngest son’s Kindergarten teacher. The quilt pattern is from the Spelling Bee Book by Lori Holt, and the fabrics are from my stash.

This quilt was a long time coming for sure. I originally started it to be a gift for my oldest son’s 4th grade teacher but did not end up finishing it in time to gift. The quilt was in my WIP/UFO pile until the beginning of this year.

I love constructing the blocks with traditional piecing rather than foundation paper piecing. Thankfully all of Lori Holt’s patterns utilize traditional piecing methods. FPP is one of my least favorite techniques. Love the accuracy, hate the execution.

All of the 52 letters use unique fabrics, there is not a single repeat within the letters. As much as this quilt was a scrap buster, it also created a heck of a lot of scraps too! Because all of Lori’s books contain instructions for blocks that finish at 6″ or 12″ I was able to pull some of the blocks from other books while making this quilt. A majority of the flower blocks came from Farm Girl Vintage or Farm Girl Vintage 2.

We are very quickly approaching the end of another school year, and I’ve already warned my kids that I need to know if I’m making teacher quilts this year. I’ve also decided that Pencil Club President Quilt will be my go to teacher quilt from now on. Anything more involved is just too much.

I recently looked back at the history of my blog, and my previous Young Texan Mama blog, and I definitely post significantly less now.

Especially since this was gifted almost a year ago and I am just now posting about it! 2024 is the year of finishing WIPs & UFOs and documenting the process along the way!
