Layer Cake Carousel Quilt

I’m so excited to introduce to you my version of the Fat Quarter Shop Layer Cake Carousel quilt pattern. This is the most recent pattern in their Short Cut Quilt Series which features projects that are quick and easy. Often utilizing precuts and limited fabric requirements.

Brightly colored quilt twisted in the center.

As the name implies, the Layer Cake Carousel pattern uses the Layer Cake precut plus a yard for the border. But you can leave off the border for a slightly smaller quilt if you only have a layer cake available. My version features the Animal Animal collaborative collection from the team at Ruby Star Society. The border fabric I used is Speckled in the color Goldfish, a fitting choice for the fabric collection.

Orange is a color I don’t use a lot in my projects and the has the smallest representation in my stash. This fabric collection has quite a bit of orange in it, so this was a step out of my color comfort zone. In the end, I am so happy with the bright orange border. It is exactly what the quilt needed.

The quilting is a wavy grid using Aurifil 50wt thread in the Tula Pink neon orange limited edition color. Unfortunately this color will one day not be readily available, so I’ve bought a few spools to make sure I have it for a while.

Sticking with the animal theme, the binding uses Ruby Star Society Speckled in the color Flamingo. It is the perfect bright pink fabric and I definitely need a bolt of it in my life. No quilt is complete without a label, and while these darling Sarah Hearts labels are a good start I do still need to add an official label with my details on it.

This quilt is finish number 4 for 2025! It is a productive year so far, and here’s to hoping that it continues down that path.
