Make a Quilt Coat | Seamwork Easton Commentary & Special Customization

As a member of the Seamwork Ambassador team I get early access to their upcoming patterns. In the Fall of 2020, they released the Seamwork Easton Jacket. Being a quilter, I couldn’t help myself & I jumped at the opportunity to make a version of the pattern!

*Note: This post is a throwback. Check out how long my hair was!*

Seamwork Easton Jacket

The Easton jacket features an oversized fit and dropped shoulders with a shawl collar and snap closures on the center front. In addition to learning how to quilt the outer fabric, youโ€™ll learn how to line the jacket and finish the collar and hems with bias binding.

Seamwork Patterns

I kept things tame with this first version of the coat by using Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in the color Steel for the main body of the coat. The interior lining is Regent Street Lawn(similar fabrics), so it is super lightweight and soft. Living in Texas means I don’t need a hefty coat for 95% of Winter, unless the power grid fails again. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Adding a Feature Quilt Block

My coat is like a mullet, the party in is in the back. ๐Ÿ˜‚ While making this coat in November 2020, I was also in the process of creating my Blanco Quilt pattern. To test my math, I made several blocks including the version above that I then added to the coat. You can find a tutorial for adding a featured quilt block to your quilt coat HERE.

Pattern Review

Seamwork Patterns overall are some of my absolute favorites. They have thorough written instructions, clear and easy to understand graphics, and they are size inclusive. The Easton Jacket comes in Misses (sizes 00 – 16) & Curvy (sizes 12 – 26). There is also a video tutorial for sewing along.

Easton is a great coat/jacket pattern for confident beginners. The trickiest part of construction is the collar and lapels as they are all one piece and a bit fiddly to sew. When sewing my jacket I made a couple of changes. I omitted the front snaps, left off the pockets, and I hand stitched my bias binding instead of machine stitching it.

Would I make the coat again? Maybe. In February of 2021 I made the Grainline Studio Tamarack Coat and found that style of quilt coat is more my style. Honestly, I need to make both again. ๐Ÿ™‚
