This week is my first time participating in Sew Thinky Thursday over at Mommy’s Nap Time. This weeks topic is:
** Bad sewing habits. Do you have them? Share with us, what are your worst habits when it comes to sewing? **
I hate to say it, but I have more than one bad sewing habit.
1. I don’t change my needle as often as I should. I know this is a big no no, but I forget 90% of the time to change needles when starting a new project. This is mostly because of bad habit #2.
2. I have sewing ADHD and 99% of my projects overlap. I have an issue with starting and finishing projects without starting on something else in the middle. Often times I get bored with doing one thing over and over again, so I start something new to re-stimulate my interest.
3. I don’t clean and oil my machine as often as I should ๐
4. I use “cheap thread“. I never really saw an issue with using Coats and Clark thread, but the last time I got my machine serviced the woman informed me that it was the cheap kind and that I needed to use better thread. Is there something wrong with using “cheap” thread?
I wouldn't call having multiple projects going at once a bad habit! It is called multi-tasking and is often a good thing as you (potentially) finish that many more projects overall. I also use Coats and Clark thread, and have for well over a decade despite numerous lectures from various people. It has never created an issue for my machine (a Janome) and I when I have tried more expensive thread (like Metler which people keep giving me because they can't believe C&C works for me) I don't see a difference. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Sewing ADD here too! I come by it honestly though and typically have at least half a dozen projects going at once. ๐ I can't resist. Also, I agree with Sally, cheap thread can cause you troubles, especially with free motion quilting. I am trying to switch over to aurifil which is just plain expensive, but the quality is great. I was using coats and clark and getting frustrated at finding several flaws (knots, burrs, etc) in each spool. Nothing like jamming up your machine or screwing up your free motion quilting because the thread was poor quality. Try a spool of aurifil or metler and you'll be likely to love it. ๐
Thanks for linking up this week! I hope to see you around next week too!
I don't see the issue with cheap thread either. I bought some Aurifil which people rave about and it snaps, constantly!
I'm enjoying reading about everyone's 'bad' habits ๐ I have a bit of the sewing ADD, too, and I really have to force myself to finish one project before I start another. I never really thought that the type of thread mattered, until I bought my new sewing machine a couple years ago. What I notice is at times, the cheaper thread tends to give me more troubles… plus, it makes waaaaaay more lint inside my machine ๐
Oh I so hear you on the crafting ADD! I usually finish my sewing projects, but I have a ton of knitting just sitting around that is waiting to get finished.
And I see nothing wrong with using Coats & Clark. I've been known to use $1 cones of serger thread…bad, I know. ๐ But I cannot see myself spending $7-$8 a spool for the good kind!
